Smoke-Free Housing

Smoke-free housing protects the health of all New Yorkers, saves money for landlords and property owners, is strongly supported by the public, and completely legal.  The Coalition can help you go smoke-free today – contact your local Borough Partnership who can provide guidance, technical assistance and help with signage.

DID YOU KNOW:

There is no safe level of secondhand smoke and even brief levels of exposure have been shown to be harmful.

DID YOU KNOW:

Secondhand smoke in multi-unit dwellings cannot be contained. Cleaning the air andventilating buildings cannot eliminate the health hazards of secondhand smoke and exposure is especially dangerous to residents’ health, especially for children and seniors. Air movement in multiunit dwellings is significant (tests show considerable air movement from one unit to another) in some cases, up to 65% of air is shared between units. (NEED TO FIND SOURCE)

DID YOU KNOW:

A 100% smoke-free multi-unit dwelling means higher property values, lower fire of fires and potentially lower insurance rates. Also, a no-smoking residential policy can reduce the cost of physical property damage. On average, it costs six times more for a landlord to rehabilitate a residential unit of a smoker than a non-smoker, at a cost of $3,515 compared to 560.[1]
